Spring clean your Shoe Rack

Ciara McNiven, podiatrist, believes Spring is a great time to discard old, worn out or ill-fitting shoes which may be damaging your feet. Look out in particular for:

  • Trainers that are showing signs of wear and tear (especially the soles) and may no longer offer adequate support or absorb impact
  • Shoes that have an unpleasant odour as the bacteria causing the odour can lead to fungal infections
  • Shoes that rub or are too small or too big. These can cause blisters, callus, damage nails and even cause in-growing toe nails

Does your child have Severs?

Severs Disease is swelling and irritation of the growth plate in the heel and affects children during growth spurts. This is mainly due to muscle, bone and tendons growing at different rates.

Severs can cause pain, swelling, redness of the heel, and stiffness of the foot (particularly first thing in the morning), leading to limping, walking on tiptoes and pain on pinching the sides of the heel of the foot.

Anti-inflammatory medication, applying ice, rest and orthotics may help and can alleviate the symptoms. Contact reception for more information or to book an appointment with Patricia Avery, our biomechanics specialist podiatrist.
