Caring for Carers – Backcare Awareness Week 2013

Janet Bell – Osteopath

BackCare  – the charity for healthy backs www.backcare.org, based in Teddington – is promoting an awareness week to encourage people to take better care of their backs. This year’s theme is Caring for Carers.

Here at Teddington Osteopaths we are very aware of the role that many of our patients take on as carers, looking after disabled, sick or elderly relatives, partners and friends. They provide a wide range of support to those they care for including personal care, such as dressing and bathing, providing transport, running errands such as shopping and administering medication or medical care. All this is very demanding, both emotionally and physically.

BackCare research indicates that 70% of unpaid carers suffer from back pain. As osteopaths, we know how often carers have back pain.  Not only do we treat those symptoms but also give advice on how to prevent further pain and injury through exercise, good technique and a healthy lifestyle.

So, to the often ‘unsung heroes’ whom we have the privilege to treat at Teddington Osteopaths, and all 7 million unpaid carers in the country – we salute you and look forward to continuing to play our part in the care of carers.
